Why do I need a logo?

What is a logo?

A logo is a visual representative of your company that is made up of letters (Logotype), abstract or literal graphics or a combination of letters and images. It is usually the most prominent part of a company’s identity and therefore makes it the most important.

Logo’s are sometimes referred to as the following:

  • Logotypes
  • Brandmarks
  • Trademarks
  • Symbols
  • Identities

Purpose of a logo

As a logo is the face of your company its main purpose is to provide a feeling of trust, professionalism and be memorable. Logos are usually the first thing people see when they look at your website, brochure or business card etc so it is important that it makes a lasting impression. A badly designed logo could lose you potential customers so don’t settle for average.

Why do I need a logo?

Besides what a logo is and its purpose, the reasons you might need one are as follows:

  1. Starting a new business is probably the common reason.
  2. Changing the name of your current business.
  3. Updating or rebranding an old-fashioned logo.
  4. To differentiate your business from similar businesses.
  5. You would like to represent a new product range or service with its own identity.

A good logo must…

  • Work well online and in print.
  • Work on different colour backgrounds (e.g. white and black).
  • Have the ability to be scaled without losing its quality (designed using a vector program like Adobe Illustrator).
  • Does not use any clipart!
  • Be legally protected.
